Center for Islamic Sciences (CIS)

Center for Islamic Sciences (CIS) is dedicated to the promotion of research and diffusion of knowledge on all aspects of Islam. CIS encourages a creative exploration of natural and human sciences from the Islamic worldview, critical integration of contemporary disciplines into the framework of traditional Islamic thought and learning, and a renewed and rigorous link with the intellectual tradition of Islam. CIS supports activities aimed at enhancing our religious and scientific understanding of nature and the human condition. The Center recognizes an underlying unity of all branches of knowledge as stemming from and anchored in Unicity of God (tawhid), the most fundamental principle of Islamic ontology and epistemology. Seen from this perspective, the entire manifest world, from the lowest to the highest levels, is recognized as an integrated and interconnected system. CIS recognizes this cosmic hierarchical structure, with its underlying unifying principle of tawhid, and operates within the epistemological framework of the Qur’an.

CIS publishes a semi-annual journal Islamic Sciences (JIS).  JIS is a journal of Islamic perspectives on science, civilization and intellectual history. It is dedicated to a creative exploration of the natural and human sciences. The journal publishes articles which critically evaluate contemporary knowledge as seen from within the framework of traditional Islamic thought and learning. It explores ways to renew rigorous and productive links with the intellectual tradition of Islam in order to enhance our understanding of God, life, the cosmos and the human condition.

In 2007, the Center initiated the Qur'an encyclopedia project. The seven-volume Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qurʾān (IEQ) is envisioned as a scholarly reference work, providing comprehensive and authoritative articles on all concepts, persons, events, things, and places mentioned in the Qurʾān. IEQ draws on a wide range of traditional Muslim sources, including exegeses, Hadith collections and commentaries, classical lexicons, biographical dictionaries, universal histories, works of jurisprudence, Prophetic biographies, and treatises on spiritual and moral psychology—some of which have never before been presented in any encyclopedic work in a Western language. Based entirely on primary sources and held to a high standard of academic rigor, IEQ integrates source material at several levels: its conceptual structure presents an integrated view of the overall message of the Qurʾān; it incorporates and integrates various strands of Islamic scholarly tradition on the Divine text; and presents a cohesive, cross-referenced text that is at once contemporary and classical. The first volume was published in January 2013. For details see the dedicated website for the project www.iequran.com.

The Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qurʾān (IEQ) draws on a wide range of traditional Muslim sources, including exegeses, Hadith collections and commentaries, classical lexicons, biographical dictionaries, universal histories, works of jurisprudence, Prophetic biographies, and treatises on spiritual and moral psychology—some of which have never before been presented in any encyclopedic work in a Western language. Based entirely on primary sources and held to a high standard of academic rigor, IEQ integrates source material at several levels: its conceptual structure presents an integrated view of the overall message of the Qurʾān; it incorporates and integrates various strands of Islamic scholarly tradition on the Divine text; and it presents a cohesive, cross-referenced text that is at once contemporary and classical.

The carefully chosen lemmata reflect the thematic structure of the Qurʾān itself, while the rich bibliography at the end of each entry provides a valuable resource for serious researchers. Conceived as a seven-volume authoritative contribution to and an in-depth reference work about Muslim scholarship on the Qurʾān, this landmark publication presents a trove of knowledge about the Qurʾān and its exegetical tradition as an indispensible tool for specialists as well as the engaged general reader. The seventh volume is devoted to indices and supplementary material, including a thematic cross-referencing index of the entries in the preceding volumes.

Following practices of respect and priority normative to the Islamic scholarly tradition, the first volume of IEQ begins with the entry on the Supreme Name, “Allah,” followed by “Aḥmad,” the second of the Prophet’s two proper names in the Qurʾān, and proceeds thereafter in alphabetical order. The volume ends with the entry on the “Beautiful Names of Allah”. Thus bounded by entries on the Divine, this inaugural volume of the seven-volume IEQ brings to an English readership a wealth of scholarly material not found in any other reference work on the Qurʾān. The first volume also includes a contextual introduction situating the project in the broader history of discourse on the Qurʾān. The forty-seven entries of this volume provide extensive original translations of source material and tap into a vast range of resources to present comprehensive and authoritative articles on concepts, persons, events, things, and places mentioned in the Qurʾān and its commentary tradition.
